Introduction

Our client, an internationally respected grower-owned and established organisation,  continually focuses on providing premium quality and value, to their brand of fruit and are known for being the ‘best in the world’. Innovation and a world-class breeding programme dedicated to the development of new varieties are their key strategies to ensure their leading global reputation.

Currently they are well advanced in trialling production of premium quality fruit with the aim to identify varieties which can be sustainably produced in China.  This process will require thorough evaluation of the risks and challenges unique to the Chinese orchard and post-harvest environment.  Based in Shaanxi in China, an important aspect of the role is to bridge relationships between the organization and its research partners in both China and New Zealand.

Requirements

To achieve this goal you will be tasked with identifying and developing relationships with leading science groups and initiating project management into prioritised areas of fruit production for full scale Chinese commercialisation.

Key responsibilities of this role will include;

  • Management of the Orchard Productivity Research Programme in China, in collaboration with the Global Production Manager, Chinese Science Institutes, relevant Chinese Government Agencies, MoU Partners and PFR.
  • Identifying knowledge gaps to develop Projects in collaboration with key stakeholders.
  • Creating Project Contracts, Pricing models, Methodologies, Timelines, Intellectual Property implications and managing scope and cost.
  • Diligently communicating research project outcomes to operations teams to support commercial activities in China.
  • Developing and consolidating relationships within the Chinese Agriculture (or fruit) and Research Sector to enhance fruit supply capability.
  • Managing relationships with the Chinese organisations to ensure highest level of commercial, political and scientific support from the Chinese partners.
  • Regular and accurate reporting.

To be considered for this role, you will ideally have the following skills and attributes;

  • Relevant Tertiary Qualification in Horticulture/Agriculture or a similar field.
  • High level of Fluency in both English and Mandarin.
  • Proven working experience at a Senior Level within a similar sector.
  • Project Management experience with the ability to plan projects well in advance, taking into account resources, deviations and deadlines.
  • Strategic ability to identify issues and opportunities and develop communications solutions that deliver on business goals and values.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills at all levels of the business whilst consistently upholding the organisation’s values and ethics.
  • Intuitive and logical problem solving skills where you are able to make informed decisions.
  • Self-motivated, resilient with a ‘can do’ attitude and a high level of flexibility to adapt to change in circumstances.

Key to your success will be your ability to develop and maintain strong networks/relationships within the relevant Chinese and NZ research community, funding partners and other key stakeholders to achieve successful outcomes. Initially, you will work in NZ with the Innovation Team before re-locating to China, with periodic travel back to NZ to stay highly integrated with local research developments.
