Introduction

Our client is a large multi-disciplinary environmental laboratory, providing scientific analytical and related specialist services to a diverse range of internal and external customers.  This organisation offers a dynamic working environment with an excellent and cohesive company culture.

As a part of Senior Leadership Team, the Head of Microbiology Department will play a pivotal role in driving a culture of quality and excellence through enhanced operational excellence and friendly and efficient customer service. This is a busy, fast paced role where no two days would be the same and you will need to have a level of flexibility to devote extra time in emergent situations.

Utilizing your sound technical knowledge in Microbiology and Molecular Biology based Diagnostics, you will continually focus on developing and implementing Continuous Process Improvement Initiatives.

Requirements

 

Key responsibilities of this role will include but are not limited to;

  • Providing Visionary Leadership and driving financial performance.
  • Strategically growing the laboratory’s capabilities through motivation, training and development of the team.
  • Providing technical support and advice to staff and management.
  • Utilise your knowledge in molecular biology and microbiology for method development and expanding the range of services on offer.
  • Managing the development and implementation of quality standards along with maintaining IANZ accreditation.
  • Developing and maintaining excellent client relationships.
  • Developing new business initiatives and growing existing business activities, through operational change and productivity improvements.
  • Ensuring timely and accurate reporting, calibration and maintenance of all lab equipment, general laboratory housekeeping, etc.
  • Demonstrating leadership and commitment to the Health & Safety policies and wellbeing of employees.
  • Contribute to planning and budgeting.

 

The successful candidate will ideally possess the following skills and attributes:

  • PhD and/or Post-Doctoral qualification and experience in Microbiology and Molecular Biology/Algae Taxonomy/Water Microbiology or similar relevant qualification.
  • 10 years’ experience in water and wastewater, soils or air quality testing including at least 5 years staff management experience.
  • Sound understanding of GLP, ISO17025 principles.
  • Proven leadership and people management skills in a sophisticated technology environment.
  • Financial management experience with an inherent commercial acumen.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Confident user of computers and software – spreadsheets, word processing, LIMS software, instrument software, etc.

 

With direct line management responsibility for nearly 10 senior and junior Laboratory Technicians you will strive to foster a strong culture of ethics and team spirit, whilst focussing on building strong, trusting and long-lasting relationships with both internal and external clients.
